Luke Bruton

This week we are back in the hybrid breeding ground of fearless bodyboard chargers, South Africa.

Our next rider comes from a port city on SA's south west coast directly below the very impressive Table Mountain and at one point was home to the once imprisoned Nelson Mandela on Robben Island, it holds impressive accolades such as in 2014 World Design Capital but more recently and for the seventh time has been awarded the best destination in Africa at the World Tourism Awards.

Without further ado, can I please introduce our next rider......

"My name is Luke Bruton, I am 16 years old, born on the 17th September 2002.

I was born in Cape Town and have lived here all my life.

I've been bodyboarding since I was 6 years old and started taking it seriously when I was 12.

I started because of my dad, I don't remember how I got on the boog, just one day found myself enjoying it and just carried on.

My childhood heroes have to be riders like Jared Houston and Mark Mcarthy.

I grew up bodyboarding Derdesteen, so I'm proud to call it my local, I also bodyboard Melkbos a lot .

My favourite spots would be the Hook and Exposures, have had some of my craziest waves there.

I don't have a favourite break in the world but I would one day like to surf waves such as Fronton, Nazaré and more.

The first proper bodyboard I ever had was an NMD Njoy.

I did my first comp in 2014 and I have been part of the western province bodyboarding team for 4 years.

So far I have ranked 5th, 4th for boys division and 7th for the juniors division.

I am currently still in school in grade 11 and I ride for Reef South Africa on my reef Caves bodyboard, reef wetsuits, fins and leashes.

I've never really had a "crew" to surf with, I have surfed a lot in the past with Henry Le Roux and I surf a lot now with Aiden Wilson.

I don't really buy a lot of bodyboard clothing as I have my reef clothing and all of my WP team kit and old comp shirts.

Music that really gets me pumped for a surf is things like, Rap, Rock, deep house and even trance. I listen to Eminem and other rappers before heats and some hard rock/metal.

I've had a lot of good memories of bodyboarding, I won the Cape Classic in 2016 which was like my first comp that I did seriously but I think my favourite memories were like getting sick barrels or landing that first flip or even a roll.

Before I started bodyboarding I used to do life saving and the bodyboarding for fun before and after just about every Sunday, eventually my brother carried on with lifesaving to become a lifeguard and I found free surfing and competitive bodyboarding to be the thing.

I would just like to say thank you to Reef South Africa for the ongoing support over the past years since I've been on a reef board and my goals so far would not have been possible without you.
